Islamia Girls School

In our campaign to promote Human Rights to society, we visited the Islamia Girls School in Kilburn, North-West London. The aim of our visit was to teach the pupils about the importance of Human Rights and to demonstrate two out of the 30 articles of Human Rights, article 2, “Don’t discriminate” and article 15, “The right to a nationality”.

Firstly, the pupils were very enthusiastic about participating in the performing arts workshops. They impressed Emma when asked about the meaning of the Human Rights as one pupil made it clear on how it emphasizes the fact that human beings are entitled to these rights. Subsequently, Emma highlighted the second article from the Human Rights Declaration; “Don’t discriminate”. The girls performed a play about a young girl called Jasmin who was discriminated against for wearing a Hijab.

Additionally, the pupils were encouraged to write poems based on article 15, “The right to a nationality”. This seemed like a tough cookie to crack for the girls as they had never written poems based on human rights in the past. However, Emma was happy with the outstanding responses from the girls. One pupil mentioned part of the Jasmin story within her poem to stress the fact that "We all have the right to belong to a country, no matter where we are from."

Finally, the girls enjoyed the workshop and learned more about Human Rights then they did before. As a way of supporting the Human Rights campaign, Emma directed them to sign a pledge. The pledge states how they will abide to the Human Rights.

Thanks a lot girls!
